What are botulinum toxin injections?
Wrinkles are one of the “wake-up calls” of skin ageing process. Expression wrinkles are the result of active facial expressions and deficiency of elastin, collagen, and moisture in a certain area.
Botox injections are one of the most effective, safe, and fast wrinkle removal methods, to be more precise, injections of botulinum toxin. During the procedure, a beautician injects the botulinum toxin product into the area of a defective muscle. It blocks impulse transmission to muscle fibres. The muscle relaxes and wrinkles are smoothed out.

What can be corrected with botulinum toxin?
Botox injections remove wrinkles:

  • in the corners of the eyes (crow’s feet);
  • between eyebrows (wrinkles of anger);
  • horizontal wrinkles on the forehead;
  • raised and strained eyebrows;
  • perioral wrinkles (monkey wrinkles);
  • wrinkles of the nasolacrimal groove;
  • tense chin;
  • horizontal wrinkles on the back of the nose;
  • cords on the neck.

Contraindications
It is better to avoid injections of botulinum toxin in the following cases:

  • pregnancy and lactation;
  • malignant and benign neoplasms;
  • neuromuscular pathologies;
  • myasthenia gravis (muscle weakness);
  • vision disorders (above −5);
  • cuts, rashes, herpes, burns in the areas of Botox administration;
  • haemophilia;
  • administration of antibiotics and anticoagulants;
  • allergic reactions to botulinum toxin;
  • in individuals under 18 years of age (administration under 18 years of age is possible when prescribed by a doctor, for example, to correct frowning in adolescents, treatment of cerebral palsy in children, etc.).

In the rest of the cases, anti-wrinkle injections around the eyes with the use of botulinum toxin will help to get rid of manifestations of ageing or pronounced facial expressions quite rapidly.

Complications

  • Loss of eyesight. That is why poor eyesight (-5) is one of the contraindications for the use of Botox. Prior to the procedure, a beautician has to ask about their patient’s eyesight.
  • Drooping eyelids and eyebrows. May occur in case of the wrong dose of the medicinal product and poor choice of an injection site. Before the injection, check your doctor’s level of qualification.
  • Swelling under the eyes. The culprit is a blockage of a very active circular muscle of the eye.
  • Dislocation of the lower jaw. It has been known to occur in patients with strongly developed chewing muscle of the face. Due to the excessive injection of botulinum toxin into the chin, muscle relaxation occurs and the likelihood of this complication increases. Therefore, it is important to choose the right dosage of the medicinal product and pre-evaluate the state of the muscles.
  • “Frozen face” effect. This is the most common fear among patients. The Internet is full of photographs of celebrities with a lack of facial expressions due to unsuccessful Botox injections. It is possible to avoid the “frozen face” effect with the help of the right dosages and extremely accurate administration of the medicinal product.
  • Tension headache. It can be caused by an overdose of the medicinal product or an incorrectly chosen injection site.
  • Occurs in case of violation of recommendations during the recovery period. Therefore, before the procedure it is important to ask your beautician in detail what is and is not allowed after injections.
  • Decreased effect of the medicinal product. This may happen as a result of violations of recommendations for the recovery period by patients. Exercise, going to bath houses and saunas immediately after the procedure, as well as taking anticoagulants can reduce the effect of botulinum toxin injections.

What types of botulinum toxin products are there and what is the difference between them?

  • Botox (USA) is one of the medicinal products containing botulinum toxin. The very first in the cosmetology market. Its onset of action is faster than that of any other similar product, and it is suitable for correction of facial wrinkles before important events and outings. Its drawback is the risk of getting the deeper effect of a frozen face, as well as acquired tolerance — with each subsequent procedure, the duration of the effect decreases.
  • It is manufactured in France. The onset of effect after the procedure is rapid. Yet, the result of Dysport injections does not last long — just up to 4 months. The disadvantages are exactly the same as those of Botox.
  • Xeomin (Germany). It contains pure botulinum toxin without a protein component, which rules out the likelihood of development of an allergic reaction. It provides a more natural effect for smoothing of wrinkles, while maintaining facial expressions and not distorting facial features. Also, the medicinal product has no acquired tolerance — with each subsequent injection its effect is not reduced.

The effect of all medicinal products lasts up to 6 months. After it wears off, it is recommended to repeat the procedure.
